INTERNATIONAL CARPET FEST

Mission

Celebrating Heritage, Honoring Weavers in the Heart of Baku's Icherisheher – Old City The roots of our mission trace back to 1983, when Heydar Aliyev, with UNESCO’s support, led the organization of the First International Symposium on Oriental Carpet Art in Baku. His cultural vision elevated Azerbaijani carpet weaving to a national symbol, paving the way for its global recognition and the establishment of institutions like the Carpet Museum in Baku.

Set against the historic backdrop of Icherisheher, the Old City of Baku, the International Carpet Festival embodies the rich tradition of Azerbaijani culture. Organized on the eve of the professional holiday, Carpet Weavers’ Day, which was established by a decree from President Ilham Aliyev on May 5, 2016, this event is a tribute to the Azerbaijani artisans—carpet weavers whose craftsmanship has been passed down through generations.

Honoring Artisans and Their Time-Honored Craft Our mission celebrates the weavers who keep ancient traditions alive, playing a crucial role in the cultural and artistic landscape of Azerbaijan and beyond. The festival not only honors their skill and dedication but alsoreinforces their vital contributions to our cultural identity.

UNESCO Recognition: Celebrating Global Heritage Both Azerbaijani carpet weaving and Icherisheher are recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, underscoring their immense cultural importance. This year, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Icherisheher’s listing and the 15th anniversary of the inclusion of Azerbaijani carpets. Mehriban Aliyeva, First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, was instrumental in securing the 2010 inscription of the traditional art of Azerbaijani carpet weaving on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
